Napeague State Park

The narrow, straight-edged “canals” that cut through the marshland at Napeague aren’t natural tidal creeks — they’re remnants of a large-scale mosquito control effort that swept across Long Island nearly a century ago. Beginning in the 1930s, workers dug thousands of shallow ditches through coastal wetlands to drain stagnant water and connect isolated pools to the tides. The approach worked to a degree, but the results were mixed. While some mosquito populations declined, many species adapted, and the ecological costs became more apparent over time.
