Bluefish, like many marine species, use an evolutionary adaptation called countershading to blend into their surroundings. Their darker backs help them disappear when viewed from above, while their silvery sides and bellies reflect light from the surface, reducing visibility from below. I’ve studied bluefish for several years and continue to be amazed by how their coloration changes with their environment. Dense schools, like the upper portion of this photograph, often appear cobalt blue, while more dispersed fish or those deeper beneath the surface take on greener tones. The reflective quality of their scales is especially visible in the few fish turned on their sides, which may also serve as a form of communication during schooling behavior.
