East Hampton, NY · 2024
Western Atlantic bluefin tuna are among the most impressive animals I encounter along Long Island’s coast. Bluefin tuna are obligate ram ventilators, meaning they must continuously swim to move oxygen-rich water across their gills. Unlike many fish, they cannot rely on buccal pumping to breathe while stationary. In the Northwest Atlantic, they feed on species like sand eels, squid, menhaden, and other small fish, and I often find them slowly cruising near schools of baitfish after feeding.
