Needlefish Preying on Sand Eels

Atlantic needlefish, a long, carnivorous, silvery fish, can grow up to two feet in length and appear almost white when struck by direct sunlight, as seen here. This species quickly became one of the most challenging animals I’ve tracked due to its agile, fast, and unpredictable movements. Found in small schools often traveling alongside tuna, needlefish typically hunt at night and follow the seasonal migrations of their predators, entering New York waters in the spring and departing in the fall. An exceptionally graceful species, they have a unique digestive system and lack a traditional stomach, instead producing the enzyme trypsin along their digestive tract to help break down proteins.
